About Joseph 

Dr. Joseph Guzman is a faculty member in the Department of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University.

Dr. Guzman holds a Ph.D. in Economic Analysis and Policy from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and advanced degrees in economics, statistics and business research from Stanford University, together with MBA and undergraduate engineering degrees from the University of Arizona.

Dr. Guzman served as a Michigan Co-Chair of the Trump campaign and as a National Elector for the state of Michigan. He is an elected Michigan Republican Precinct Delegate from Ingham County.  In 2014, Dr. Guzman was appointed MIGOP Chair of Hispanic Advisory. Dr. Guzman is also a member of Senator Orrin Hatch’s Hispanic Outreach Finance Subcommittee.

Previously, Dr. Guzman served two terms as an elected School Board Member in Loudoun County, Virginia and was appointed by the Virginia legislature as a Commissioner to the Education Commission of the States and as a Board Member or the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

Dr. Guzman’s work at the Pentagon included serving as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy in the Office of Financial Management & Comptroller, as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force in the office of Manpower & Reserve affairs and as Director of the Department of Defense Biometric Management Office. Dr. Guzman was twice awarded Civilian Service Medals in recognition of his contributions to the Department of Defense.

Dr. Guzman’s academic research focuses on policy analysis. His policy research experience includes having served as a Think Tank economist with the Center for Naval Analyses and the RAND Corporation, both Federally Funded Research and Development Centers.

Dr. Guzman has received awards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the US-Mexico Chamber of Commerce for his work advancing the implementation of biometrics technologies. He has been named to the Top 100 Hispanic Influentials list and one of Ten to Watch by Hispanic Business Magazine. Most recently, Dr. Guzman received the 2015 Michigan Educator of the Year award from the Michigan Civil Rights Board, Hispanic/Latino Commission.

Dr. Guzman and Mrs. Guzman, his bride of 25 years, live in Okemos, Michigan, where together they are dedicated to raising and educating their five beautiful children.
